“Plastic Straw Awareness” in Ege University

May 25, 2017

Ege University (EU) Faculty of Agriculture 2nd year students rolled up their sleeves to reduce the consumption of plastic straws within the scope of the “Application of Community Services” course.

Project Coordinator Filiz Tepe, who gave information about the damage of plastic to nature and the scope of her projects, stated that they want to lead the removal of plastic straws at Ege University and said, “Plastic wastes in the land and seas of the world are increasing day by day and threaten our future. The amount of plastic that enters the seas every year is 8 million tons, and most of this waste remains in nature for hundreds of years. Plastic straws make up a significant part of this waste pile. In order to reduce the consumption of plastic straws, which we mostly use arbitrarily in our daily life, awareness on this issue needs to be increased.”

Emphasizing that the aim of the project is to reduce the use of unnecessary straws, Tepe said, "The awareness created will contribute positively to the plastic waste problem that threatens our world."

Expressing that they are planning a series of activities during April and May within the scope of the project, Tepe said, “The center of these activities is the removal of plastic straws from the faculty canteens during April. For this purpose, we will emphasize that plastic straws are mostly an arbitrary consumption item, with the message 'Do Not Use Unnecessarily'. However, we will provide bamboo, paper, metal and glass straws, and baked pasta, which are alternatives to plastic straws in our canteens, both to draw attention to our project and to use them in case of need.”
